Though India's win over Australia in the world cup quarter final overshadowed TN elections, the main political parties have hit the campaign trail.
Chief Minister Karunanidhi a cricket fan according to reports watched the match for some time and was overjoyed when India won.
The three key players in TN elections: Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa and Vijaykanth in a remarkable coincidence filed their nominations on the same day, Thursday (March 24) said to be the lucky and auspicious 'Panchami' day.
The topic of discussion at most election meetings are the freebies announced by both the fronts. DMK calls the freebies announced by Jayalalithaa as 'copycat'.
Remember in 2006 elections, Jayalalithaa has criticised DMK for promising freebies and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that "freebies are the real hero of 2006
victory"
Said a prominent Tamil film lyric writer bitterly opposed to freebies: "Promising electorate freebies worth Rs one lakh per family is scandalous. Karunanidhi started it and now Jayalalithaa will Xerox and institutionalise it. This augers bad for the state's finances."
Meanwhile all leading Kollywood stars on the election campaign are drawing huge crowds. Vijaykanth at his DMDK meetings is drawing huge crowds. In Villipuram, a traditional PMK bastion he went hammer and tong at its leader Dr Ramdoss and said: "A few weeks back Dr Ramdoss was saying DMK was zero now he is hailing it as a hero."
In Madurai Kushboo , one of DMK's biggest star campaigners is also drawing huge crowds. The women voters like her simple and straightforward approach clad in crumpled cotton sari. Kushboo appeals to the voters by saying: "I' m only a reel heroine".
The real superstar is Dr Kalaignar's election manifesto, which has been duplicated and copied by Jayalaithaa. If you copy in exams, teacher will fail you, likewise I appeal to ou voters to fail her in this election examination."
